India's holiday landscape is rich, layered, and varies across states and sectors. For HR teams, leave planning directly shapes workforce availability, payroll processing, and employee satisfaction. For employees, knowing their holidays well in advance helps them plan their personal time, family travel, and festive celebrations conveniently and with confidence. This 2026 holiday calendar covers every major category of holiday recognized across India: national, gazetted, bank, restricted, and regional, all in one place.

India's holiday system is multi-layered. The Central Government sets the national framework, but states, religious communities, and regulatory bodies like the RBI each layer their own calendars on top. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for HR teams building leave policies and for employees deciding how to use restricted holidays wisely.
Three dates fall here: Republic Day (26 Jan), Independence Day (15 Aug), and Gandhi Jayanti (2 Oct). Every employer across India, public and private, must give paid leave on these days. No exceptions exist under labour law.
Declared by the Central Government, these are mandatory holidays for all government offices. There are 17 gazetted holidays in 2026. Many private employers also adopt these. Major festivals like Holi, Diwali, Eid, and Good Friday fall here.
Central government employees may choose any 2 restricted holidays from a long list of 30+ options during the year. These cover regional festivals, community observances, and religious events. Private companies often use a similar optional holiday structure.
Governed by RBI under the Negotiable Instruments Act, bank holidays include national holidays plus state-specific festivals. Banks also close on all Sundays and the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month. Dates vary by state and city.
Each state declares additional holidays tied to its own culture, history, and founder's days. Onam in Kerala, Bihu in Assam, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, and Baisakhi in Punjab are prominent examples. These do not apply nationally.
All holidays organized for quick reference and HR policy planning.
