What is meant by Leave of Absence?

Leave of Absence is a special consideration or sanction given to employees to remain absent from work for an extended period of time while maintaining the status of an employee of the organization. This is different from regular sick leave or vacation leave which are usually long and are incorporated into the leave management system.

What Situations Qualify An Employee for A Leave Of Absence?

The following situations qualify an employee for a Leave of Absence, so they can stay away from their job while retaining their employment status and benefits:

Medical Reasons

Under specific medical conditions which demand a prolonged period of rest, an employee may be allowed to take a Leave of Absence. For instance, recovery from surgery, managing chronic illnesses or addressing mental health concerns that temporarily impact their ability to perform job duties.

Family Responsibilities

A Leave of Absence may be granted to employees for family responsibilities, such as caring for a newborn, adopting a child, or providing support for an ill or elderly family member requiring temporary care and attention.

Personal Development

Employees may take a Leave of Absence for personal development, including pursuing higher education, exploring professional growth opportunities, or taking a sabbatical to recharge or just to enhance their skills and career prospects.

Bereavement

Employees who mourn the loss of a loved one are eligible for a Leave of Absence. It provides them with the time to grieve, make arrangements, and adjust to the emotional and practical implications of their bereavement.

Types of Leave of Absence

Voluntary Leave of Absence

A voluntary Leave of Absence is the choice of the employer. There is no legal compulsion on them to grant the employee permission for LOA.

Mandatory Leave of Absence

This is when the employer is mandated by the law to provide their employees with a Leave of Absence.
